Washington DC
Bringing monumental payment technology to the U.S. capital
SmarTrip® – Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Washington D.C.)
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in Washington, D.C. is catapulting its highly successful SmarTrip® fare collection system into the 21st century, with a bold plan to overhaul the 24-year-old system through incremental upgrades to the devices and back office, while also launching a new traveler mobile app that integrates trip planning, service alerts, and payment using virtual NFC-based transits cards. WMATA asked Clevor Consulting Group (CCG) to lead a comprehensive 10-year planning process, outlining a pragmatic approach to modernizing the system, and a strategy that balances funding and resource limitations with technology and operational needs.
CCG delivered a strategic plan that allows the agency to continue supporting their highly satisfied user base, while transitioning to a next-generation account-based, open architecture system, and incrementally adding new customer-focused features. CCG also supported WMATA in the design and launch of their new mobile application, which provides customers an all-in-one solution that leverages a best-in-class real-time arrival and trip planning platform. It is also one of the first in the nation to integrate payment functionality supported by Google Pay and Apple Pay within a card-based electronic fare payment system.
